STEM

STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In Carlanstown NS we value the importance of the range of skills which the children develop through STEM; creativity, curiosity, inquisitiveness, critical-thinking, problem solving & teamwork.

Each year we participate in the Curious Minds Awards (formerly Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme).  This is part of Science Foundation Ireland’s Education and Public Engagement Programme, which aims to increase interest in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students, teachers and members of the public.

Every class from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class has been involved in this programme and there are many steps that we complete as a whole school to achieve this award such as celebrating and organising activities during Maths Week, Science Week, Engineers Week and Tech Week.

This year we are currently working towards achieving our fifth Gold Award, a Plaque of STEM.
